Retaining Walls & Concrete Masonry

Hold back soil, prevent erosion, and add structure to sloped properties.

Concrete block retaining wall construction in Hurricane, UT residential yard

Why Retaining Walls Matter

If your property has slopes or elevation changes, you probably need retaining walls. They hold back soil to create level areas for patios, driveways, or buildings. Without proper retention, soil erodes, slopes fail, and drainage problems develop. A well-built retaining wall solves these issues permanently.

Retaining walls also add usable space to your property. That steep, unusable hillside becomes terraced areas for gardens, seating, or play spaces. Here in Hurricane, UT, many properties have natural slopes that benefit from professional retaining walls. We turn challenging terrain into functional, attractive landscapes.

Poor retaining wall construction leads to failure. Walls tip, crack, or collapse when built without proper footings, drainage, or reinforcement. We have repaired many failed walls built by homeowners or unqualified contractors. Doing it right the first time costs less than rebuilding after a failure.

Retaining Wall Options

We build several types of retaining walls depending on height, load, and appearance requirements:

  • Concrete Block Walls: Modular blocks in various colors and textures
  • Poured Concrete Walls: Maximum strength for tall walls or heavy loads
  • Stone Veneer Walls: Natural stone appearance over concrete structure
  • Decorative Masonry: Stamped or textured finishes for custom looks
  • Tiered Walls: Multiple shorter walls for steep slopes

Wall choice depends on several factors including height, soil type, drainage, and desired appearance. Walls under 4 feet often use mortarless block systems. Taller walls require engineered designs with proper footings and reinforcement. We evaluate your site and recommend the right solution.

How We Build Retaining Walls

Foundation and Drainage

Every retaining wall starts below ground with a solid foundation. We excavate to stable soil and install compacted base material or poured concrete footings depending on wall height. This foundation prevents settling that causes walls to lean or fail.

Drainage is critical. Water pressure behind a retaining wall can cause failure even if the wall is otherwise well built. We install drainage pipe and gravel backfill that routes water away before pressure builds up. Proper drainage extends wall life and prevents expensive failures.

Wall Construction

Blocks are set level and plumb with proper setback if required. Reinforcement goes in as we build upward. For poured walls, we build forms, place rebar, and pour in lifts. Backfill is added carefully to avoid disturbing the wall structure.

Tall walls or walls supporting structures require engineering. We work with structural engineers to design walls that meet code requirements and handle the specific loads and soil conditions on your property. Safety and longevity are more important than saving a few dollars with an undersized wall.
